Performance
The 2020 Ford Explorer takes its purpose—exploration—seriously, made abundantly clear by the powerful engine choices in its lineup. A turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost® engine comes standard in the Explorer, both capable of producing 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque and blowing the competition out of the water. For those craving greater fuel efficiency but needing a full size SUV, the naturally aspirated 3.3L Hybrid V6 engine fits the bill; not only does it offer 318 horsepower and 322 lb.-ft of torque, but it’s the proud owner of a 9.6 L/100 km combined fuel consumption rating. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ford is offering a Twin Turbocharged 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 that pumps out 365 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft of torque when outfitted in the Explorer Platinum; to take things a step further, this engine has been calibrated to deliver a whopping 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft of torque in the Explorer ST! Ensuring a mix of serious efficiency and precision driving, every engine in the 2020 Explorer lineup delivers its power through Ford’s 10-Speed Automatic Transmission with SelectShift® capability—while every model is also equipped with Ford’s Intelligent 4WD for serious on-road (and off) control. Finally, the highly-advanced Terrain Management System™ allows you to adjust the Explorer on the fly—thanks to an easy-to-use dial—swapping between seven distinct selectable drive modes covering any terrain you may encounter.

Design
The redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer doesn’t skimp on, well, anything—thanks to both interior and exterior overhauls. Inside this spacious 3-row SUV you’re treated to everything from soft-touch surfaces and Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start, to the available massaging Multicontour seats with Active Motion®. An adaptable E-Z Entry second-row seating system provides push-button access to the third-row, while an available PowerFold® third-row seating option allows you to swap from comfortable seating for seven to serious cargo space—up to 2,487.4 litres, easily accessible thanks to the available Hands-Free, Foot-Activated Liftgate.
While the interior of the new Explorer is big on space and utility, the exterior offers an abundance of athletic style. Sculpted door panels and chrome bodyside cladding accent the all-new front and rear fascia; the former featuring signature headlamps and LED lighting, while the latter comes complete with LED taillights, a body-colour liftgate spoiler, and even Dual- or Quad-Chrome Exhaust Tips on the Limited and ST variants, respectively. Roof racks with side rails come in black or Satin aluminum, with black end caps, while a Rear Bumper Step Pad adds to the aggressive blend of style and utility.

Technology & Safety
Perhaps even more impressive than the redesigned Explorer’s smart design or performance capabilities, is its abundance of technology and safety features. Starting with the standard inclusion of Ford Co-Pilot360™ on every model, featuring exceptional driver assistance features—like BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System), Auto High-Beam Headlamps, and Rear View Camera—alongside safety features like Lane Keeping System or Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, you may not be able to finder a safer SUV on the market.
Of course, the available hands-free, voice activated Ford SYNC® 3 infotainment system adds to that safety, allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road while still accessing their phone, messages, and favourite apps via Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility. For passengers, or when the vehicle is in park, an LCD touchscreen is also available—ranging from 6.5” to a 10.1” version. Auto-Dimming Sideview Mirrors, an available 12.3” customizable cluster display, FordPass Connect™ with Wi-Fi Hotspot, and an adaptive LED lighting technology are all features found standard or available across the Explorer trims, making the 2020 Ford Explorer as smart as it is safe.

Explorer Model Changes
The Ford Explorer has been a mainstay of the Ford lineup—the entire SUV market, really—since its introduction for the 1991 model year. While the 2019 Ford Explorer was a more than competent version of this full-sized Ford SUV, the brand decided to overhaul it anyway, and the results are spectacular. Now in its sixth generation, the 2020 Ford Explorer is packed with more performance, aesthetic appeal, utilitarian charm, and advanced safety and driver-assistance features than ever before. You can still find an excellent Ford Explorer from 2019 or earlier, but for our money there isn’t a better SUV in the segment than the 2020 version of the Explorer!
2020 Ford Explorer Trim Levels
The 2020 Ford Explorer packs thrilling performance and amazing technology inside a beautiful redesign for the model’s most complete version to date. At home on the highway, or simply helping haul groceries home, the 2020 Explorer offers larger-than-life versatility and capability inside an exceptionally spacious SUV, alongside Ford’s most advanced safety and driver assistance features yet—standard!
